Introduction

Enameling is an ancient art that originated in Iran after the Parthian era. This art is actually the art of fire, earth, and bright colors. In enameling, metals such as gold, silver, zinc, copper, etc., are used, with copper being the best due to its high strength and flexibility. To make enameled vessels, any metal intended for use with enamel is melted in a hot furnace and then covered with a white glaze called the base coat. It is then placed in a hot kiln for baking. To ensure the glaze’s durability, this process is repeated up to three times. After that, the heated vessels are painted with special colors by skilled artists. This stage is called seven-color painting. After painting, the vessels are placed in the kiln again. Enameling literally means the blue sky, and the vessel with its magical designs reflects this concept. In Dehkhoda’s dictionary, enameling is defined as the painting and decorating of copper, silver, and other metals with glaze colors and placing them in a kiln.
